Feng Shui has its origins in China more than 4000 years ago. It literally means wind and water. Wind carries energy and water collects it. This movement and study of the flow of the chi or vital energy is the concern of Feng shui.

Man needs chi to survive and prosper. Chi permeates all around us. The quality of chi determines the surroundings as the surroundings determine the quality of chi.

He needs to be in the right place at the right time to harness and contain the energy needed for success. This is why the principles of time and space are of such importance in Feng shui.

Feng Shui encompasses three elements: Heaven luck, Human luck & Earth luck. It is worth mentioning that to the Orientals the concept of "luck" is more a concept of "attraction of multiple choices" rather than the Western concept of luck being "chance". 

•  Heaven luck: relates to your astrology chart and the movement of the stars during your life. One can analysis one's luck in relation to the star movement. The Ba Zi (four pillar) chart or chinese horoscope of the person lets us know which elements are strong at the time of birth. These elements are affected by time. Hence heaven luck is considered as an aspect of timing.
•  Human luck: is the effort a person puts into his life and the choices he makes.
•  Earth luck: is the environment where we stay and live. This environment has a great effect on us. People who live in the country will have different earth luck than those living in big cities or near water, giving rise to different lifestyles.

Feng Shui aims to improve one's earth luck whilst taking into consideration one's heaven and human luck.

We improve the feng shui of a property by correcting or enhancing the flow of energy in, out and around it.   By concentrating benevolent chi in buildings where we live or work we can improve our health, wealth and happiness.  This is done by implementing changes to the house.  Some of the recommendations given to improve the feng shui or earth luck might be related to:

• colour, shape and texture of walls and furnishings
• placement of furniture such as beds or desks
• floorplan layout: use of rooms, circulation from room to room
• kitchen layout:  oven placement, sink placement
• garden layouts: planting, paths, driveways
• boundaries:  walls, hedging, fencing
• Water placement: water features, ponds, swimming pools,
• Doors: modifications, placement

Any advice on structural change is kept to a minimum and effort is made to make them as cost effective and simple as possible whilst still achieving maximum results!
